Large Hadron Collider turns on ‘data tap’ By Paul Rincon Science editor June 3rd 2015

This animation, courtesy of Cern, shows proton "bunches" circulating the LHC and colliding in the four big experiments This animation, courtesy of Cern, shows proton “bunches” circulating the LHC and colliding in the four big experiments

Scientists are waiting for the first new data to begin flowing from the underground particle smasher, paving the way to a new era in physics.

On Wednesday, the vast machine clattered proton beams together at much higher energies than were achieved during its first run in 2010-2013.

This should allow physicists to hunt for signs of new scientific phenomena.

Situated 100m beneath tranquil countryside on the Franco-Swiss border, the particle smasher operated by Cern has already carried out test collisions at the energy of 13 trillion electron volts (TeV), up from a high mark of 8 TeV achieved during the machine’s first run.

Now, with the first “physics collisions”, scientists can begin their work.

At 0940, operators at the control room in Geneva guided two stable beams of proton particles around the…

Seed of Life Tarot

wands01What an amazing card to start off the month… The Ace of Wands! A card of action and strength, this is a good omen for any new beginning. It’s hard to understand these bursts of energy now, so all we can do is to sit back and enjoy.

We may feel like we are seasoned pros at what we do, but the Ace reminds us that we are all students in life and to keep journeying on your path of enlightenment. Don’t get too excited about your ideas yet. Keep working on them. Pride will follow naturally.

Today you will feel rather productive and may even experience the fruits of your labour sooner than you think. Just don’t get too comfortable. Bigger rewards are further down the road and you are just beginning your journey.

Wheel of Fortune

Anne Duthers

Wheel of FortuneThe harder I work, the luckier I become. This is of course, a paraphrase of Thomas Jefferson’s famous line. If we think of Fortune as a dispassionate goddess, detached from all but random irony as she dispenses luck, it seems a silly thought.

But Fortune is not Fate. Looking closely at the image, we see the elemental guardian angels all read from blank books.

We can’t forget the Snake as Wisdom, unattached from the Wheel and descending to us like a gift from above. Or yet, Anubus, the jackal headed god on the other side of the Wheel. On the Day of Reckoning, it is he who calls the balance as our heart is weighed against Truth, symbolized in that story as an ostrich feather. Brings a whole new twist to being light- or heavy-hearted!

The Goddess Fortuna is portrayed as a sitting Sphynx, far from reclining meditation as she is…
